Can an encore pistol be switched to a rifle and vise versa? I mean can you attatch a buttstock to the pistol frame and put a rifle barrell onit, or do the rifle barrels only fit the rifle frames...

yes a rifle barrel and/ or pistol barrel will fit on the same receiver. just change the butt stock and fore end.

Its illegal to put a pistol barrel less than 16" on a rifle stock. It states on the butt stock that "Federal Law prohibits using a barrel less than 16"

If you purchase an encore as a pistol it is legal to convert it to a rifle, muzzleloader, or shotgun. On the other hand if you purchase your encore as a rifle, muzzleloader, or shotgun, it is illegal to convert it to a pistol since the frame was registered as a rifle.

There is a lot of debate on this which ultimately comes down to the Supreme Court versus the BATFE. The ATF has issued several different letters, each different from the last and hold about as much legal protection as advise from the IRS-None.

Right now the best plan of action is to have a separate pistol frames and rifle frames


Google Thompson Contender ATF Letters or ATF Pistol Letters should bring the several variations of the letters.


ETA- but no matter what, you cannot use a barrel less than 16" with a rifle stock and the overall length must be greater than 26".

Buy the frame as a pistol.

There is now a place on the yellow 4473 form for the purchase of a frame/reciever. Use this option. The rest of the gun is accessories, eg: bbl and grips or stock.
