    Propane Question?

My gas company keeps leaving me these not so pleasant notes saying I need to have atleast 20-30% left in my tank for them to fill it up next trip.

Any one know why? 30% of 250 gallons is still alot of gas.

Not sure why they would do that. I had a 100 gallon for several years and seemed to run out more often than not. It was always on a Saturday night or Sunday morning and surely the coldest day of the year but my gas man would always come take care of me as soon as it got daylight. He felt sorry for me last year and traded me a 500 gallon tank for the 100. I called at 15% (75 gallons) the other day and ordered 100, no problem.

Well today I only had 10% left I can see where he pulled up and left. Without filling the tank.

i was told they have to be inspected once dry or too low when i was asking around about filling mine by the owner of a local company, not too sure how true it is, just bought a new house and this is the first place ive had a tank on

My notes just say it helps him to fill it. We used to run propane tractors adn farm equipment when I was growing up and I filled all kinds of tanks up back then. Ive never heard of anythign like this.

            That's BS
My propane company will come out and fill up however much I want regardless of how much is still in the tank. I always have them fill it up (80%)

I deal with 3 seperate propane companies in different parts of the state and none of them have ever said the tank needed to be at a certain level to fill it.

I'd find a different propane provider.

I happen to own all 3 of the tanks I use but some companies lease the tanks to the customer and they are responsible for maintaining them and the regulators and such.

My company won't fill mine up unless I have 20% or less. Not sure why but I guess it has something to do with making the run profitable. They always ask how much is in the tank and when I tell them 10%, they are there the next day. The company I have to deal with is a major company starting with an "F".

We had a lease tank for many years. Could of bought 2 or 3 over that time. I know during cold spells like this where demand is very high, their supply or ability to fill everyone is limited. If a person still has 20-30% they are not at risk of running out within a few days. At 10% or less it is different, a home will use quite a bit over a 3-4 day freezing spell and is at risk of running out. We were always filled when we called at 10% or lower, but then we were on one of their lease tanks. If a person owns their own tank they might be a lower priority to them.

If they were there and it was at 10% and still did not fill I would be calling another dealer.

I would call the competitors and see what they have to say. If they don't have silly rules I would send the first company a "note" stating I no longer needed their service

Never heard of that. My company here in Weatherford comes out and fills mine, whenever I call. They sometimes ask how much I have, just to amke sure they can get to me before I run out. But I call when I have 20% or less. I'd call some other company.

I'm in the industrial gas business and there is no reason they shouldn't be able to fill the tank when it is that low. Ideally, they would want it as low as possible so they sell as much as they can on that run. It doesn't make sense to make two runs out there selling 60% of the tank volume every time when you can make one run for a 90% fill.

Labor and transportation are the biggest part of the cost of any of these products.

My Propane Co. wanted to charge me an extra fee to bleed air out of my gas lines, when my tank got lower than 20 percent! Didn't happen, because I own the tank and know how to bleed air out of lines! Don't ever tell them it's that low! Just order the propane and leave payment under lid! Just a way to make them extra dollars!

some gas companies will assume that if you have less than 25-30% left in your tank that you have a leak and will not fill that tank until a leak test is performed. We ran into this at our camp. Called in when we had less than 10% and they required us to have a leak test done and to change regulators. IMO you should call around to different service providers and see what they might say. good luck!
