    Protecting Gate Locks

We've had an issue this season with people cutting or damaging our locks on the entrance gate to our lease. Has anyone found a reasonable solution to fixing this problem like maybe some type of bell housing around the area the lock is located on the gate ?

    Or any other ideas ?

    Thanks

Game wardens cut locks from what I've heard. Do you have to leave them to where the GW can cut them if he has to?

They are trying to cut the lock and not the chain? Not very bright, are they?

put hardened chains and hardened locks on your gates
use the round Buffo type locks and that will keep folks from cutting the locks
If the game warden wants access he can call you for a key or mail him one.

I've seen some pretty ingenious setups while hunting timber land in East Texas. Some of those gates will have 5 or 6 locks inside a housing that there in no way to get bolt cutters in.

Our gate has a steel loop that slides into a steel box welded to the post and the is open at the bottom. The steel box is about 4" square. Make sense?

I have seen gates with a large piece of pipe that the lock resides in. You have to reach in to unlock and there is no way to cut it off short of a cutting torch.

Don't know what they call it or I would google it and post a pic

I make sure the GW knows our combo, and request he use us for sting operations etc.

We have seen him 3 times in 21 years.

once you figure out how to keep them from cutting the lock, they will just tear the gate up.

There is no way to keep folks out. Trust me. I work for a large agency in charge of maintaing and managing wetlands and storm water facilities of all kind, ie. basins, bayous, pumps, levees. There is no way to keep people out. We've tried every type of lock, chain, steel housing, steel galvanized posts that are mushroomed at the bottom and concreted into the ground. People will find a way to tear up anything to get onto your property and poach or go mudding and tear everything up to hell. We've had a lot more luck setting up cameras and running undercover stings then we ever did trying to keep people out.

Would love to catch them in the act.

If you make the gate stronger their just going through the fence somewhere.
