    Soured corn in feeder...

Today I went out to check on my feeders with hopes of possibly sticking a doe/spike in the waning days of this season. I had about 2 bags in there but some of it had begun to sour or get that whiteish/green moldy color. I wound up taking off the spinner and let it all fall out, cleaned it with a stick to be empty, put the spinner back on and another two bags of fresh.

One thing I did this season was to keep it full and topped off as best as possible and I think this might have led to the problem. So, the question is, was this proper or was it probably OK to leave it alone. I'd guess maybe 12 24oz cups is what was soured of the two bags.

For sure, the piggies will enjoy their meal this evening as hopefully I'll stick one tomorrow (Brrrrrrrrr......) morning I'm thinking about a try for them.

Thoughts on the leave it alone/replace it appreciated!

    Thx

If it was wet you prolly need to find out if you have water getting in and let it dry out after sealing it up or else the fresh corn you put in will go south too. I doubt keeping it topped off is the issue as that is fairly regular practice for me.

find out where the moisture is getting in and seal it off.

I would check for a leak somewhere. Not sure if the question is about dumping the corn out or topping it off all the time. Both are right thing to do if you have the time to do it. Shouldn't have made the corn sour. Moisture came from somewhere.

It may have gotten wet before you poured it into the feeder.

                Yes, from Academy....

I'm not sure how water got in if that's what caused it in the first place. I've not filled it in the rain and it was about half-way down the side where it started. To the best of my knowledge, I've got a good tight seal, but moisture must have gotten in somehow to start the process.

In any case, I'll keep an eye on it for a few weeks while still running feed through it for spikes/does and piggies.

I'm sure the pigs will still eat it, but would the deer pass on it? Not alot of it was soured, but some.

Water was getting in my barrel feeder by water getting in under the rim of the lid. Water was being drawn back under lid and into feeder as the water ran oof of the top. Corn got wet clogged the feeder and it smelled horrible. Bought a new slip on lid from academy and problem is solved

Get you a new lid or you will be having a mess every time it rains. I have also heard of some of the corn from the sporting goods stores being moldy when it comes out of the bag

If the feeder barrel has bolt-on leg brackets, make sure you've sealed the bolt heads inside and out--you'd be surprised how much water can seep into the feeder--almost like the corn is sucking it in--

Do you have a funnel in the bottom? I have switched all my feeders to the metal slip on lids due to ease of use, and water problems with barrel lids.

some barrels sweat a lot and the moisture comes from there, not a whole lot you can do about that other than not filling it and making it run dry... the greatest thing about having soured corn in a feeder was getting my sone and nephews to "help" me clean it out when it happened,, my cousin got the chance to let his son do it this year,,, maybe a little cruel... but dang funny!!!!

You haven't lived until you are the new guy on the lease and have to crawl into a feeder barrel on its side to scrape all the "stuff" out of the bottom.

The deer will eat it but you did the right thing getting it out of the drum. I poured out a bag of wet moldy corn last year and it was gone within a week. Trail cam showed the deer were all over it.

The last time that happened to me I just layed the whole feeder on its side and took the top off and funnel out. The piggies crawled in and cleaned it all up, as slick as if I had power washed it.
