Looked at an old thread, but am wondering if anyone might be using it now with some new insight. I only need a phone for my alarm system, and was tired of paying for something I never use.
I've been considering biting the bullet on one of them myself. I've seen several threads where people complain about dropped calls and poor voice quality. I've also seen plenty of people who praise it's functionality. IMOH just the Voicemail sevice and the phone number is almost worth it for the $20 a year, and if the phone works so be it
I have read that if you want it to perform the way it should you need a FAST internet connection.
captainsling, with an alarm system I'd consider going with a better quality service. Why spend money on an alarm and paying the monitoring company a monthly fee, only to have the least effective link in the system being the phone line. Just my opinion for something meant to aid in protecting your family.
I have it. When I bought my home this past summer, I upgraded my alarm to wireless dialer (no phone line to cut to render the alarm useless) and got the majic jack just incase I couldn't handle not having a landline. I rarely use it! My computers are laptops. The MJ has to be plugged in to the computer to work. Every time you move the laptop, you have to dc the MJ. If you use a desktop computer, I can see where it would be less of a pain. The internet has to be connected for the phone to work. I figured for $20 it was worth the gamble. It is worth $20 but not much more. The "signal" is "broken" at times. If you have anything else running on the internet at the time, forget it. I know I bounced around a lot, but hope it helped?
