My black lab will retrieve just about anything

Doves, ducks, squirrels, balls, coke bottles, etc. She'll bloodtrail deer and hogs. But she won't retrieve a river otter. Shot a river otter while duck hunting yesterday morning and sent the dog in the water 3 or 4 times. She'd swim right to it and refuse to pick it up. Ended up having to paddle the boat down the river to retrieve the otter. If the dog would have gotten it, she probably would have had trouble once she got it to the shore. Otter was about 3.5 feet long and probably weighed 30 - 35 lbs.

          Why'd you shoot the otter?
          Are they destructive?

            CITES Tag???

            Hope you have one.

Otter CITES tags are required for all otters that are legally harvested in Texas. The pelts are required to be tagged with an otter CITES tag regardless of whether or not it is being shipped out of Texas. The otter pelt must be tagged within 90 days of take and is valid for the year in which the otter was taken.

My thoughts as well, if your not going to eat it or mount it then why kill it?

She probably doesn't like the oily taste. They have some glands, that secreets an oil they then rub on their fur to keep it clean and dry.
