Brown recluse spiders are also know as "brown fiddlers" because of the violin (as stated earlier) either on their back or bottom of their abdomen. I was bitten by a brown recluse in 1980. Ended up having to have a skin graft on my elbow. I knew I was bitten by a spider but didnt give it much thought until I got out of the shower one night, and while drying off literally wiped the skin off my elbow.
This is how my bite went down:
Got bite in bed. Woke up in a blinding sweat, but no pain. Went to work. A day or so later my arm filled up with fluid. Next day, my arm was as hard as a potato and the bite site had turned black and was decaying. Needless to say, I got my arse to the doctor.
