How do you store your rattling horns?

I read a while back on a thread that I cannot find, some put wax or oil on their rattling horns when they put them up for the year....or if they are left out too long.

Curious if you've got any suggestions....

    THANKS

I have put linseed oil on horns to keep them from having a dried out/hollow sound. I think deer on a deers head have some moisture in which makes them sound fuller than horns that have been sitting out for a long time. Maybe that is why the Boone & Crockett guys have a waiting period to measure after the original "green score"

I do the same, linseed oil and I do it now, so any scent residue has a chance to dissipate before next years hunting season.

I store mine on a hook, in my travel trailer, at the deer lease.

I'll soak them in water, that seems to keep them sounding louder than when they're dried out.

I pour a chocolate shake from Whataburger on mine when the season is over. This seems to preserve them the best. I tried strawberry once and couldn't rattle up a buck for nothing. The next year I used chocolate and you wouldn't believe the luck I had. Don't ask me why but the shakes from Whataburger work best...

I read an article about a guy that would cut the fat off of a deer he harvested, boil it down and coat the antlers with it. He would then, hang them up til next year. This not only preserved them, but made them smell like a deer.

I usually use linseed oil on mine, but it smells and makes them smell which could spook deer.

I may try the fat method this year and see what happens.
