Well we went to Mason for our annual father son hunt this year and had a great time. This was the first time I had my two sons (13) and (12) with me at the same time so I was a great trip. My annual father son hunt is actually with me and my dad but this year I decided to take my two boys so that we would have what I call our first "3 generation hunt". It turned out to be a great and productive trip for all except my oldest son. He shot and missed a good mature doe the first evening. At first glance we were sure he had hit her as she jumped 5 feet striaght up in the air but we couldn't find blood after 2 hours of looking so we decided to go back to camp and watch the video. After watching in slow mo the bullet actually went right over her and struck the cactus right past her and I guess it startled her and caused the jump. Things just didn't work out for him to get another shot but he had a great time and we got some quality time together.
My 12 yo got to harvest his first deer ever on this trip and I was so proud of his cool nerves when it came time to pull the trigger. It is the best feeling for a dad to pass on the art and tradition of hunting to the kiddos. The feeling was better than any trophy I have ever taken and nothing could be better. He took the shot at 120 yards with my 30-06 and dropped the doe right where she was standing and we were both pumped. Cool thing is I got it on video and besided the shot you can hear the exictement from both of us after the shot. I have some work cut out for me cause he kept the empty shell casing, the head (for skull mount), 1 foot and the tail. Can't help but laugh but I will have to put something together for him.
Oh yeah, Dad and I harvested a nice cull 6pt w/o brows and 4.5 and 3 does. Not too bad for a 3 day meat hunt on a little day lease in Mason with my boys and Dad. Already thinking of where to take us for next year.
