    Defeated

Last year my buddy's and I made the 18hr adventure from Anchorage Alaska up to Prudoe Bay. After a long drive and swapping stories we finally made it. We set up camp and started hunting. Now let me paint the picture. Its October the snow is knee deep and the temp is in the teens in the day and single digits to sub zero at night. The tundra is flat with no trees, rocks, stumps, and nothing to hide behind. Just flat earth. The Caribou were everywhere. We each took our chances at stalking but we couldnt get close it seemed that a 100 yards was as close as we could get. With thousands of eyes and noses out there you are going to get seen.Days go by and no luck just alot of physical punishment. So after miles of crawling threw the snow i got close to a herd of about 100. I found a little hole to sit in and kinda buried myself in the snow to hide myself. After about an hour the herd made its way closer to me. I was ready, at this point I'm not horn hunting, the first Bull that gets close enough im taking. I range a nice bull at 40 yards and decide to take hime. I draw my bow and to my surprise my bow goes limp. I look down and realize my string and cables had fallen off my cams. I had gotten some snow in the cams and it froze. I have never felt so defeated. So i get up mad, yelling, cussing, confused and look back at the herd, these Caribou never got spooked they actually came closer. I ranged again and they were at about 20 yards. Like they were laughing in my face. How disapointing..The next day was the last day and my buddy asked kindly if i wanted to use his bow since he had already gotten a Bou. At this pont I was so physically and mentally tired I said no. What happens we drive up the road about a mile and see a herd getting ready to cross the road. So he jumps out of the ruck gets on the other side of the road and waits. He got a really nice bull at 35yds. All I could do was laugh and be happy for him.

Sorry about your bad luck but I bet you still had a good time. And you have a great story to carry with you for all time. Congratulations on that trophy!

That sounds like a very good reason to go back and do it again. They make it look so easy on TV.

If anyone has ever seen the Realtree Roadtrips (I think Season 2) Michael Waddell has Bou that rubbed up against him. It was migration time and they were going nuts. TV makes things look so simple. QB is right again.

I think you and me might be brothers ... I've never been on a caribou hunt, but many of mine seem REAL similar to yours!

It'll make a great campfire story for years to come, though!
