First thing you should do is a helicopter survey to try and determine the sex ratio and age class of your deer herd.

Break it down simply as Buck / Doe count

Then Young / middle age / Mature

Our management plan has been to feed protein year round, plant 10-12 acres of food plots in both the spring and fall. We let all yearlings and anthing not legal in an AR county walk. Then we listen to our neighbors shoot everything that walks!! How's that for a plan?? I know it's been working for some of our neighbors.

I like mesquitecountry's plan. You will first need to get with TPWD biologist to get on MLD. I believe the biologist for your area will be Mary Humphrey. She is great to work with and very knowledgable.

Why do you need MLD to manage? You should be able to do it without MLD......

I need to update ours to include helo surveys. You don't need mld to manage.

I should revise maybe to helpful not necessary completely. I didn't need a biologist to teach me how to do spotlight surveys, record keeping, observations etc. but found her very helpful for me regarding native browse and browse surveys. I'm not from the area I hunt in and was completely shocked at the protein value of some browse I would have thought was trash. Very educational for me and didn't cost a thing. Another thing is deer populations in some areas are impossible to handle with license tags versus MLD permits, unless you just bring lots of guests. I think the MLD Permits is the biggest advantage.

I think MLDP has its proper place in some situations and not in others....... very good debates for both

So you are saying that in order to get a tax break you have to be MLD??

Wildlife Tax Exemption and MLD are totally seperate and exclusive of one another

You can't just jump into a MLD Type 3 program. I don't see being able to do proper herd management on just state tags, unless you want to bring in TONS of guests and theres a risk right there... The MLD permit really gives you the advantage spefically when dealing with doe populations and moving up from type 1.

Going from Type I to type III takes work and dedication. Good management principles should be applied for anyone wanting to develop a strong herd.

I'm not trying to go MLD. The place my dad bought is not large enough to do helo surveys, and MLD programs etc..... I just needed a management plan in order to be able to get some of the wildlife exemptions. I appreciate everyone's info. very much.

It's pretty simple to get the exemptions from the county. Try this link. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publicat..._mgmt_plan.pdf
