    First Duck Hunt...Wow!

Went on my first ever duck hunt this morning with a buddy and a friend of his. We got to the boat ramp at 0300 and were brushed in and ready to go about an hour before shooting light. It was foggy as all get out and we were about ready to call it quits at 0900 because nothing was moving. My buddy was about to take the shells out of his gun when we had a triple come in low and fast and then the hunt was on. Between the three of us, we dropped 11 birds in less than an hour, all coming in as singles, doubles or triples. That was the most fun I've had bird hunting in a LONG time, I WILL be going back....dang, another hobby and it's just as expensive as deer hunting...guess I better find a second job!

Welcome to the world of waterfowling... it's as addictive as archery.... I've found
that you generally get a few birds right at daybreak, then the next wave tend to
come in around 10-10:30 am.... right when most people's patience has run out...
I always hunt the blind til noon, especially if cold, windy, foggy, wet.... etc..

Duck hunting is truly an addictive behavior. After a bad day I'll swear I'll never do it again- and the next day I'm itching to go again. Worse than archery I've found.

                    $$$$$
If you think deer hunters will buy anything, wait till you hang out with waterfowlers....they buy 3 of everything.

I did my first duck hunt last year with Main Beam. It was cool as could be. The wife wasn't mad till she caught me pricing boats, shotguns, new camo...

It was a LOT of fun, but that 2am wakeup kicked my butt! When I woked up, I was ready to go, got dressed and moved all my gear to the door to wait for my buddy to come pick me up and we headed out. Bought a cup of coffee at the gas station on the way out and I was good until I got home. Then I ate lunch and said, "I'm going to take about an hour nap, then get up and go work on the shop." I layed down at 12:30 and woke up around 5pm! Ate dinner and watched a show or two on TV and passed out on the couch! Maybe if I hadn't been out at the Cowboy Christmas Ball until midnight, and had gotten a few more hours of sleep the night before, I would have been okay. I think we're going to try an afternoon hunt/scouting trip tomorrow afternoon. Anyone had any luck in the evenings?

Oh yeah, and to answer the question about what kind of birds....one Gadwall hen, 5 ringnecks, four teals and a mallard hen IIRC....but I can't be certain, as I know virtually nothing about ducks...all I know is they said shoot, and we all shot. They said that the ringnecks are rare around here, I don't know, but we sure killed a lot of them and saw a bunch more. They were amazed that we took 5 of them, said they took one earlier in the season but had never killed any before that. One thing I did learn though, them ducks is hard to kill. Of course, it would have helped if I had a better choke, all I had was modified, but some of them would get hit two or three times and still be alive after they hit the water!
