    Coyote/Varmint trapping questions

We've been on this lease 3 years now, the first year we got on after dove season mostly to shoot hogs. At that time there were just the farmer's two feeders on the place, not being used until he'd throw in a couple of bags of corn a week before his kids would come hunt a time or two during deer season, or when we were there to hog hunt. During dove season a year ago, we set up two more feeders and have kept them full and running for about a year and a half now. There have always been hogs, we see even more of them now, along with us seeing more deer this year than last.

The problem is that we're hearing more coyotes, and seeing a lot more more coons on the gamecam, and seeing a lot fewer turkeys this year.

We've shot a couple of coyotes off gut piles after cleaning hogs, but it's time to start getting serious about varmint control if that will help the turkey nest success rate. We'll probably spend more time hunting the gut piles this winter/spring now that we have the stands and feeder pens set the way we want, but I also want to hurt the coon population as well.
I trapped a bit way back in high school, mostly coons, possums and a few foxes, so I know the basics, but have no traps anymore.

Obviously I can get them online, but is there a place in DFW/N.Texas that carrys some #3 or #4 coilspring traps/drags/stakes/scents, and maybe some of the steel tube coon traps?

Or, does anyone have some of the above traps laying around that I can borrow or buy?

Snares work much better but you run the risk of killing dogs and or livestock. If you guys want to get serious you may want to pool you money and buy a FOXPRO.

Gander Mountain in Sherman had quite a bit of trapping supplies last time I was there.

Corsicana Gander Mountain had a lot of trapping supplies also. This would probally be a lot better option.

Try using Monkey Food for your coon problem. Search Monkey Food on here and it will tell you how to use it. It works wonders on coons

I've seen previous posts about the Malrin/Monkey Food, just don't care to poison anything. So, that leaves trapping or calling/shooting them as options...and I don't want to spend the $6-700 on a FoxPro...at least until I've tried it and liked it.

good luck.... but it takes alot of effort

i am not sure the size of your property, but we snare coyotes on 1800 acres that is high fenced all the way around the peremiter..... on average we catch around 2 per week

Hog can wipe out your turkey nest along with coons. I'm sure a coyote will take any opportunity it has also.

Snares are about the cheapest and easiest route as far as trapping. But as stated you do run the risk of non targets.

If you can regulate where and when they are used, you can get the hogs, yotes, or coon in the cable.

If you have javalina, I would be carefull where I hung cable for the hogs.

trapping laws have changed so much i would suggestion getting caught up on what is and is not legal in the way of leg traps. Gander mountain carries a good supply. I to am fixing to get back into running some trap lines, but need to brush up on new regs.

We have caught about 20 coons with live traps and marsh mellows.
