    High fence Low fence

What is generally considered to be a high fence heigth wise? How high can a fence be and not impede the natural movement of the deers? thanks

Eight foot is the normal but even a five foot fence will slow down does and fawns and I have heard that a buck on a mission can clear an eight foot fence.

12thman is right on target....... some deer are just not meant to be fenced and will clear an 8 ft fence at will.

the place i am managing has an 8 ft all the way around it...... since we have a pretty large land base, our deer feel no need to jump the fence because they have all of their needs met inside it.

I have seen 2 doe jump an 8 ft fence and run across the road and jump another 8ft fence - and about 10 seconds later a nice buck followed right behind - I had heard they could do it but didn't beleive it till I saw it.

I would say anything higher than a regular ol' 4-5' barbed wire fence would impede their movement to a certain extent. But if your asking at what heigth would I consider calling it a "high fence". I would say 8'. They can still clear it, but there are not many that are going to walk up to it and consider jumping it.

Texas A&M did a study awhile back about buck movement. They used a large ranch that was high fenced and gave a fairly large group of hunters free range to hunt the ranch that season. Each hunter wore a GPS and they had a bunch of bucks collared and followed all participants movements.

                  Findings:

MANY hunters were within 20' of bucks almost daily and didnt ever have a clue there were deer within almost arms reach. Also during the "rut" several deer, all bucks were leaving the study area? They checked for holes in fences and digging underneath and found neither to their surprise. It was found that the bucks being so "stirred up" during the rut that they would jump the high fence at night to cruise for willing mates and then return to their bedding areas in the morning Ah what we do for "Love" guys

If we sell our place and buy a new one I am putting up 10ft...that should keep al lthe deer out I dont want getting in.

The deer don't just go over. I had a deer go through a highfence from outside headed in but it wasn't the tightlok type of netwire.

My dad and I pushed a 2yr old buck and a doe one time in a 10' fence and the doe ran along the fence while the young bucked JUMPED THE 10' FENCE. True story.

Isn't this a loaded question? Not sure a fence can be constructed that doesn't impede the natural movement of deer...natural movement would not include a man made fence in the middle of a trail or travel pattern.
