I've had both Gerber and Leatherman multi-tools, and they are both good, but the leatherman is my favorite. If you're looking at knives, check out the Benchmade Auto-opening. I've wanted one of those for a few years, but can't justify spending the $$$ on it. Of course you've got the be Military/LE/Fire to even purchase or carry them.

If you just want to get him a gift, then I would go with the multi-tool (leatherman is my favorite). Let him get into the program and graduate first before dropping the money on a custom knife or anything too expensive. The course is over 2 years long, and there is a high dropout rate. I'm not saying your nephew isn't capable, but I would hold off and make it a graduation present. He will need a multi-tool during the course, but I believe that he would be issued one. Usually, whatever you will need they will supply, but a good custom knife, or multi-tool are definately great to have.

I was looking online, and they have a 60-90% dropout rate!
