Scam or real? Texas unclaimed properties

I got a letter in the mail today that "looks" like it's from the texas comptrollers office stating I possibly have unclaimed property. The website the letter says to go to is www.claimittexas.org

then you put your name and search...

anyway, it came up that I had some money sitting out there from wells fargo. Not sure where the money came from, but oh well...

then, you are directed to an online form where you have to put your name, address, and SS#. I don't like putting my SS# in an online form, even though it shows to be a secure website address...

does anyone know if this site is real, or is it some type of scam?

My mom told me about it a couple years ago and I blew it off... then she told me about it agian and I had a little money coming from an in surance company, sent in my processing fee (roughly $15 or so)... And got a check for the $185 that had in unclaimed property from the insurance company....

Some of those sites will charge a fee to check. There are several that are free including each states website. One of the approved sites I believe it www.missingmoney.com I just went there the other day and found I had money coming back to me I didnt know about. Just download the application that gets mailed to the comptroller with the copies of documents they ask for (id and proof of address) and mail it off. Ive done it before. It usually takes about 6 weeks to receive your check. The whole process is for real. The letter you received sounds like someone fishing for business. Ive never gotten a letter in the mail. It could be legit but you can check through many avenues on your own easily for free. Just do a search on google for "unclaimed Property Texas".

its real. took us a few weeks to get my wife's "unpaid" $13. I figure it's worth the wait, cause $13 is $13.

I noticed several folks suggesting Calling the comptroller....yes it woud work but unnecessary. easier and much quicker checking on line. They will most likely tell you to downlooad the application onine and mail it anyhow. If ya have them mail it to ya you will have to wait weeks longer and then have to go online to get info anyway. Just sayin'

Go to the website....once ya put in your info a list of names and addresses will come up. Find the name matching YOU and YOUR address OR former addresses and it will tell you has money they are holding for you and how much it is. very easy to do. heck gimmee your name and adress and I'll look for ya. No ss# needed or anything.

I would use the one that JLP posted that is valid and run by the state. My company sends money for unclaimed property every year. Good luck

I already checked that, and it's my name and a previous address for certain... just wanted to make sure it's not some kind of scam.

I've got a couple hundred in overpaid insurance premiums from about 23 years ago. Haven't been able to get it though.

They need, among other things... proof of address at the time, the apartments I lived at in Austin have since been demo'd, and my then employer didn't keep payroll records that far back.

it is probably legit. my wife got a letter a couple months ago from the same folks (claimittexas) and just got her ~$300. it was pay for unused vacation time when she left a job a few years ago. we had moved about the same time as she left the job, so we never got the check originally & didn't even think about her being owed that.

Its yours, download application and send it in. Not a scam. It will have comptrollers name and address where to send when ya download it and its all filled in for already when ya do. Easy as pie.
