    Stupid Noob Question

I just got my first bow in Nov (Admiral) and I'm in need of arrows. When the manufacturer’s chart asks for length of arrow, what does that mean? Is that just the carbon shaft or does it include the nock? Or is it nock to broadhead insert? Or is it nock to broadhead tip??

Also, how do you determine the proper length for a 29inch draw? Or is it all preference based on desired speed?

Proper arrow selection sure seems complicated for a begginer.

    Thanks!

the length of the arrow is from the crotch in the nock to the end of the shaft,

and that is determined by adding 1 3/4" to your draw length,

and the draw length should have been determined when you got the bow so it is not to long or to short

My arrow length is 27 and my draw is 29. I depends on the spine of the shaft and how far you want the arrow sticking out past the riser if any.

Thanks to all of you for the help.

Yeah (to me) the 2009 Admiral was one of the smoothest, fastest, and quietest bows I shot. The Z7 was a up there too, but at $200 more I couldn't justify buying it when I felt the Admiral was just as nice. No regrets and we've already spilt blood together!!!

Thanks that helps. I bought half a dozen arrows (GT XT Hunters) at All Star Archery when I got the Admiral. Those measure from nock crotch to end of shaft at 27 1/8". I'd like to try some Easton FMJs or CE Maximas to compare with the Gold Tips.

I bought some Rage 2 blade broadheads and Muzzy MX3s to experiment with. I wanted to test the fixed blades vs mech. Well in practicing I noticed the fixed blade arrows were fish tailing some? Is this due to the fletching being too small? Maybe y'all are right...I should just go to a bow shop.

I would say it is due to you bow not being tuned. What is your draw weight and spine (how stiff they are) of the arrows.

Ahhhh, so many questions and so many things to learn about and experiment with. Good for you, sounds like you are enjoying the wonderful pursuit of bow hunting. Hopefully a good archery shop can help with your arrow (and other) issues and you can share your successes with others on this great site. Howdy and Welcome to TBH!

Draw Weight is 65#s. Spine of my XT Hunters is .400. They have the HP Vanes.

The spine should be ok. You just need to broadhead tune if you want to shoot the fixed heads.

Keep in mind, that if you change arrow diameters, your bow needs to be retuned because the different diameter arrow will sit differently and will consequently shoot differently.

Have you shot it from 20, 30, 40 and 50 yards (if your pins allow it)?
Any tuning problem will be amplified the further back you shoot from.

Mechanicals will typically shoot better than fixed blades IF your bow isn't perfectly tuned. When it is perfectly tuned, you can screw on a 100 grain dog terd and the bow doesn't care!

Welcome to the fire and to the archery obsession.
