    Ag Degree

    Hey guys,

I was wondering if ya'll had any ideas for a job that I could get with an Ag degree from Texas A&M. I have been teaching and coaching for a few years, and it is not for me. Any input would be appreciated! Thanks!

I have an Animal Science degree from Tech and have worked in the food industry. I do not recommed it as it is a rough industry with high turnover. But it is an option and could lead to a brighter future. I now work in pharmacueticals and would have not had the opportunity without a degree and managerial experience in the food industry.

Take a look at Texas Dept of Agricultural. I don't have an Ag degree but I'm looking for a gig and I have read some of the job descriptions that required a degree as yours. Good Luck.

My wife has an Ag Leadership and Education degree from TAMU. She says it prepares her to be in a leadership role in a company... Such as HR... She is a stay-at-home mom right now... My SIL is in the same major and is looking for a job when she graduates...

I work for TDCJ on one of the prison farms in Rosharon,Tx just south of Houston. We have a couple of openings coming up soon you might want to keep your eyes open for them. I have been here for 8 months now and love the job!

When I was looking most Ag jobs pertaining to what I wanted to do were all out of state.

The only jobs you can get with an Ag degree in today's market are teaching and coaching.

Seriously, unless you have a PhD or you're willing to travel out of state that's probably all you can hope for unless you're willing to take a low-paying technician position or pretty much any other type of job where a GED is the only requirement.

I have an Ag Leadership & Development degree from TAMU and I am a commercial construction project manager. Started out in residential and then moved into commercial. Market is different now than when I was getting out of school for sure, but once you have your first job, the field of study no longer pertains. Unless you are going into something that requires your specific degree: medical, architecture, engineering, etc., then its just what was said before, a piece of paper. Most companies just want to know that you have a college education. After the first job, the relevant work experience is much, much more important. On my resume after my first job, I never put my major or my GPA, just graduated with a bachelor's degree and the year. No one ever asked for anything else. It was all about what I had done in my previous jobs.

If you don't mind relocating it wouldn't hurt to drop a resume with all the stock show/rodeos in Texas...They typically hire ag degrees even for operations/maintenance...They probably won't do anything for the next couple of months as they are right in the middle of producing their 2010 shows but they frequently have turnover between shows. It can turn into a good gig...I know one guy with a batchelors that is popping 6 figures after being promoted from his hire position.
