and I'm not good at it. Help a brother out. I hope the pics are OK- the camera wouldn't act right.

Looks 3. I'd say 2 just looking at the back molar but looks like this deer chewed more towards his front.

3.5 the dentin is wider than the enamel on the 4th tooth but is narrower than the enamel on the 5th tooth. Also the lingual crest on the 4th and 5th tooth are still sharp. age the right jawbone. a deer uses their right side to chew more often than their left

Tubby, I agree a deer favors chewing on one side over the other but in my experience it seems to pretty much even out right versus left.

I just checked four jaws I have laying around, two from this year and two from last. Three of the four had more wear on the left side.

Thanks guys. I was surprised when I saw the teeth. I was thinking this deer was older than 3 1/2 when I shot him, but I guess the teeth won't lie.

Teeth will lie from time to time. Even sending them off is not 100%, probably 80% at best. Looks 3.5 to me from those pics. Got any pics of the deer? We have killed known aged bucks that we knew were at least 6.5, and their teeth showed 3.5.

That is a fact!! A deer that is protein and corn fed and lives in an environment that doesn't have lots of sand in the soil will show less tooth wear. A free range deer that forages for everything he eats or a deer that hangs out at feed pens eating off the ground in very sandy conditions will show more tooth wear than body age. I have seen it many times with know age deer that I have taken. Just my observations.

It also depends on what they eat. If a deer eats protien all his life his teeth are not going to show as much ware, as if a deer eats corn off the ground. I think this deer is 3.5.
