Best Rifle Scope for under $225

I am trying to help my mom shop for a scope for Christmas for my BIL. The scope is going to be mounted on a 300 Win Mag and used to hunt deer in standard East/West Texas conditions. Unfortunately the budget is $225. I know that the best option would be to add cash to the $225 and get really nice glass, but this is what we are working with. All suggestions welcome.

Like most things, you can get all carried away with rifle scopes. I've been tempted to get a new one for my .270 for a number of years now. How many is a number? Not sure, I bought this 4 power Redfield and rifle in 1965. Still works great. I can shoot sub minute of angle groups with no problem. Admittedly the rifle has a free floated barrel and glass bedded action, but still couldn't do it with a scope that didn't function properly. To answer the question, I'd buy the most quality with the fewest bells and whistles that I could find. What that is, I have no idea, but bells and whistles are a cost that gets removed from the quality at any given price point.

Look at Vortex or Nikon Pro Staff.

My knee-jerk reaction is always to say Leupold...but I've been impressed with the Burris for the money.

Nikon! The old Simmons are good scopes. Wouldn't trust the new ones. The Leupold Rifleman is not made by Leupold, it is made for them by someone else. If you get one be sure it is at least a VeriXII.

You will not believe how good Vortex Optics are until you look thru them.

Then you will know what all the hype is about.
