    Thompson encore problem

I've got a Thompson encore 270 pro hunter. Had it about 2 or 3 years and had absolutely zero problems. Took it to KDF in seguin right after I bought it and had a trigger job done on it and it is a sweet shooter.

Had it at the range with a new box of winchester ballistic silvertips and on the second shot...CLICK! Misfire. Put in a new bullet...CLICK...another new bullet...CLICK. Pulled out my old box and put 4 more rounds through it no problem. Figured it was a bad batch of ammo.

Fast forward to yesterday evening. Zeroed in on a 8" spike (old box of ammo)...zeroed in....CLICK! Puilled out another shell and dropped him...BUT...I'm worried that it might be a firing pin problem, not an ammo problem. I noticed that the dimple on the primer was not nearly as deep on the misfired round than the one that went off.

Anyone know anything about Encores, and do they have problems with this? I'm surprised that this is going on this early, especially since I slot this rifle alot at the range last year and had zero peoblems.

I like the challenge of hunting with a single shot...almost as much as with a bow, but if this rifle is going to be a problem or has a track record of these problems, I've got a good mind to trade it in on something with a bolt.

You hammer may need to be adjusted, just take to a gunsmith if I were you. I have one but dont know much about them, except they are sweet

This could be a headspace problem. You have to think of headspace differently on a breakopen action than on a bolt action. Encores are great guns, but could somtime use some fine tuning.

Heavier hammer springs will sometimes compensate for a headspace problem. Check out http://www.bellmtcs.com/store/index.php?cid=86 for info on heavier hammer springs.

Additional information on headspacing can be found at http://www.bellmtcs.com/store/index.php?cid=172

I'm not affiliated with Bellms, but occasionaly buy springs and other Encore supplies from them. They post instructions on their web site. Its pretty easy to do your own trigger job and other work on Encores.

Some trigger jobs can cause this. I don't know anything about KDF, but I only let Mike Bellm do my Encore Trigger jobs.

Just read about a guy having misfire problems with an Encore on another site. He eventually found that his hammer extension was hitting the bottom of his scope, not allowing the hammer to come down with enough force. This was causing light strikes, or none at all. I know it sounds silly - but check to ensure your hammer isn't hitting the bottom of the scope when it comes down. If it's very close, I'd suspect that might be your problem.
          All the best,
          Glenn
