Ashton and I woke at 5:00 a.m. this morning to an unbelievable fog. I grabbed a couple of cups of coffee as Ashton was doing what ever they do before you can leave the house. We made our way from Crawford to Clifton at a snails pace and arrived at the gate, after I passed it do to not being able to see the bar ditch.
We parked on the opposite side of the rail road tracks and hurried and got our gear and off we went. To say it was a muddy walk would not be a true statement, it was worse than a muddy walk. We got to the only box stand on the place and settled in for a morning of killing…… we prayed.
At 6:55 I caught movement and it was not Ashton’s legs and arms jerking around as she slept. It was a two year old 7 point and his twin brother with the extra point. I watched them as they made there way to some hand thrown corn I tossed before settling in the box stand. As I was watching them, I caught other movement down the lane to our left. I glassed and confirmed it was two magnum slick headed nana masters.
I woke Ashton from her Disney land dreams and told her to get in a position to be able to shoot one of the does heading out across the front of us. She went from foggy eyes to bright and bushy tailed. As she got her Weatherby up and ready to bark, the largest of the does stopped broad side at about 75 yards. She asked if that was the one and I promptly told her to go ahead and take it off safety. As she pushed the safety forward the doe picked up the pace to catch up. I told Ashton when the doe hits the next lane get ready and I would stop her. The doe hit the lane, I did not make a peep, because the doe stopped perfect and Ashton did not give her a chance to move again.
She hit the doe dead square in the heart and it ran maybe 60 yards before taking a dead grass nap. We ended up seeing 5 younger bucks and 6 other does before the breakfast bell rang. Next up……. a BUCK she says.
This place on the river holds a special place in my heart, see the last photo and you will understand why. Ashton was six then, she is 12 now. Man they grow up fast.
Hope all enjoyed and that everyone is having a great season.
