    food plots oats vs wheat

Around the abilene are what are yalls thoughts on what is best to plant. What would the costs be to plant them as well if you do not have any equipment. What are the steps in planting. Does anyone graze cattle and deer on it. Thanks for yalls help. I do have a neighbor who has 1000 acres of wheat across the creek from me.

I'd plant which ever was cheaper. Haven't priced the seed this year. I'd also mix in some greens and winter peas with which ever I planted. Its really too late to plant this year though. Not sure what the custom guys are charging per acre to plant either.

It wouldnt be until next year. Just trying to get a head start. Does anyone know if oats splits like wheat does when it is grazed. Also what do yall do with the plots after the season. Also do the deer keep it grazed down or does it get all the waay to germination.

Yes oats do just like wheat. If they get into it too early they'll pull it out of the ground. It will make it to germination. IN fact if you get a good stand all you would need to do the following year is just scratch the surface of the plot to get another decent stand.

Plant 50/50 if it gets too cold the oats will freeze out leaving the wheat. If you plant all oats and have a hard freeze theres nothing left. I also would mix a few winter pea's in there also.

From a palatabilty standpoint the oats have a slight edge, but there is the freeze issue.
