tips on hunting mule deer in west texas

Do they come to horns? Do they act pretty much like a whitetail dring rut? Any tips?

The place we are going to be hunting next weekend is in the crowell paduca area. Do the muleys in that area rut around the same time as the whitetails???

    thanks

Where we go north of big bend we have never had any luck rattling. Best bet was to just keep moving and glassing. Watch the draws and groups of trees during the mid day.

the mule deer rut is later than the whitetail, with the peak of the muley rut being well after the season is over... do alot of glassing, and be very mobile.. highracks work great for mule deer...

Don't hunt mulies the same way as whitetails. Muleys are creatures of habit and with a little bit of pressure they will be gone! Best way to hunt them is to go to a wheat field and wait for them or to find a good lookout point and stalk them.

high rack if you can. get up on the hills and glass under the brush because you will catch them in the shade. the rut will come in december. mule deer are stupid you can after them and 90% of the time the will just stand there. good luck get u a monster.

I never had any luck rattling. I agree with staying mobile, up high, and spending a lot of time behind your binocs. It may take you several days to get your eyes trained to pick these deer out ot the west Texas scrub. Mule deer will hold tight to cover much longer before jumping out of their beds due to a perceived threat when compared to a whitetail. You could walk within 50 yards of a big buck and never know he is there, and he will more than likely sit tight and let you walk on by. Because of this, we had luck jumping deer in the super-thick greasewood flats mid day. We would spread out with 50-100 yards in between us and walk the flats. Not trying to be quiet, talking back and forth and just pushing the flats at midday can surprise you and bust out a big one. I agree that you cannot hunt the mule deer rut in Texas during regular season. It is late December/early January and unless you are MLD you cannot hunt during that time.
