yep....this buck i shot last year was 9 1/2. The biologist on this ranch aged him 6 1/2 but we thought he was much older so i sent his teeth in to http://www.deerage.com/index.htm in Burnet Tx. I have killed a hand full of deer that were 6 1/2 plus and all of them had a roman nose....on the other hand i have killed a hand full of young deer and not one had a roman nose. Not gonna say its a 100% sign but more than likely if it has a roman nose its mature.

I heard they get the Roman nose from breaking them so much from fighting. Does anyone know if that is true?

Roman nose is a classic sign of a mature buck. For a doe, the longer the distance from the tear duct to the tip of the nose is a sign of a mature doe.

I'm gonna go against the grain here and say it's not always 100%. In 4 years we have killed two three year olds that had pretty good "roman noses" on them. We have also seen several others that have had roman noses that were not over 4 yrs old. Here is one that Kaitlynn shot in '06. My opinion is that it is more genetically related than age related but that is just my opinion and we all know what that is worth.

Agreed. although a lot of old deer have roman noses it's sure not a 100% indicator. Deer have genetic variations in facial/head features just like people do.
