Me and my son went and got on a stand this morning.....at about 8:30 had 5 does and 2 small bucks come out......shortly after a nice but sort of young 8 point came out.....almost 18 inches wide but 3 year old deer. We watched him for a bit and my son decided he wanted to take him. Got his gun up make a perfect shot. Deer went about 2 steps and was done. Now this is by far my sons best deer ever...his previous best was a spike. He was thrilled and very excited and i was for him. My uncle hears the shot and drives over shortly after and gets mad for him shooting the deer. I agree with him that in a couple years that would have been a very very good deer but to me a trophy deer is up to the person shooting him. when my uncle leaves my son questions me asking if he had done something wrong and i did my best to explain to him that as long as he is happy with what he did than i am thrilled for him. Just think adults sometimes forget about what is most important to our sport and that is getting kids into it and being excited about hunting. and by the way fresh backstrap for super tonight lol.

Congrats to your son! The trophy is in the eye of the beholder, especially if this is his best deer. There is no excuse in making him feel that he did something wrong. One deer is not going to change the look of his herd, especially since it sounds like ya'll practice goog management in general. Again, congrats to both of you and enjoy the straps!
