Thanks! This is the first buck I have seen all year on this property! So it is exciting times for me, can't wait to sling a arrow at him, if he gives me the chance!

I hate to ask, but how can you judge the age of this deer visually? Is it just years of looking at deer, and looking at teeth?

According to the TPWD pamphlets he should be legal. On a well managed lease you should let this deer go at least 1 more year, maybe 2. He's probably 3.5 years old. I'm my opinion though, if he's going to be your first bow buck, take him. Especially with the year we're having in Texas, he's probably already bred a few does. His genes have passed on, so the gene line is still going to be there for years to come.

With judging deer on the hoof (at sight or on pictures in the field), you're looking for a few tale tell signs. A slumped back (with a dip in the middle) means the deer is in the older stages of his life (5+ years). Also, the face tells you a lot. Rings or droopiness under the eyes tells you it's an older deer. As the season goes on, the fatter deer tend to be the older deer as they don't expend as much energy as a younger deer would. There are a lot of signs you can look at. This deer looks like he's pretty light on on his feet and in his prime, which would be between 3.5 and 5.5 years old.
