Schrade, Buck, or Gerber?? Your choice and why.

I personally have never owned a better knife than an Ol' Timer or a Schrade. They seem to sharpen the best and hold an edge longer than any of the others. I do like Gerbers for the same reason, but they are harder to sharpen. Buck knives that I have owned have weak tips and I have broken two cutting the sternum of deer and they do not hold an edge as long. So, I no longer use Buck. Rank like this:

    1.)Schrade/Ol' Timer
    2.)Gerber
    3.)Buck
    4.)All others

    1) Gerber
    2) Schrade
    End of story.

I have a Gerber Gator skinning knife that holds an edge through the whole cleaning of a hog with no problem. It sharpens easily with one of those plastic handled sharpeners.

All good knives. It is according to which model of each and how much on sale I can find it for. I have more Gerber than the other two but that is not by design. I just happened to have liked more of them for the price at the time. I even have a couple of the "all others".

My Schrade/Ol'timer is my favorite as well for the same reasons. It takes and holds an edge better than anything else I've owned. It does share duties in my pack with a Buck 110.

Actually the best knife that I have ever owned was an old KMart Sharp brand knife. Back in high school when everyone was getting Buck Folding Hunter (110?), I couldn't afford one at the time and got the KMart folding hunter style knife for about half the price. I don't know which big company made the knife but it was a great one that I used for many years but unfortunately lost it. It was the sharpest knife that I ever owned and could really hold an edge.

Knives of Alaska make some nice knives that really hold their edge.

I had this Chinese knife I got with a magazine subscription. Held an edge like no other knife I've owned. Worked great for small prying jobs also. I even skinned 2 hogs with this little ole knife. Lost it and my world has never been the same. I know it was a fluke becuase my friend had the same one and wouldn't stay locked open. I now carry a SOG Twitch II good little EDC knife. As far as skinnig goes though I really like My Black Toes Custom. I have also really liked Buck Schrade and Gerber I think I still have one of each scattered between the truck and fishing boxes.

I've been using a serrated Gerber for the last several years and really like it. It can be made razor sharp easily and I can cut up through a deer sternum with no problem.
