    "Open" Division LC

III. Open Division - This NEW division includes all deer that have ever been in a regulated breeding program and subsequently released and harvested by ANY means. The definition of a regulated breeding program is any action that requires a Texas Parks and Wildlife permit.

There are mucho entries in this category. Are there really that many ranches offering hunts were bucks have been in breeding pens? I thought I was pretty much up on this stuff and I'm not a high fence hater by any means, but what gives ?

    JJ,
Probably lots of 1000 to 1500 acre commercial places that are high fenced that in order to take the high number of "high scoring" deer they do every year have to release several each year to make them stay in business. JMO though.

There are more and more of them... Interesting that "The definition of a regulated breeding program is any action that requires a Texas Parks and Wildlife permit. "

Would also include every ranch that has ever had a DMP pen.

Lots of those ranches have breeding programs. The release a lot of deer at 2-3yrs old when they don't sell them. So technically they were in a pen but really the did most of their growing in a pasture.

I think it caught them on a technicality.

          Marko,

the way I read that is if you killed you dmp or breeder buck or a released buck then you would be in the open division. If you kill their offspring you are in the clear. I think it talk about the deer and not the ranch.

Because if not then most of Webb lasalle and many other counties would have to be in open category as whitetails were stocked many years ago down there. That required a tpwd permit.

Most scorers look for eartag holes or tattoo's. Deer born from a DMP pen wouldn't have them.
