    Standard Poodles

Do any of you know anything about standard poodles? My wife has dog allergies and this is one of the dogs she can live with. Its bread to be a water dog and they have a good nose on them. I am going to try to train it on blood tracking and to protect the house and wife when I am gone .Any one ever seen one work? Anyone ever trained one? Smart said something about seeing one run hogs on a post yesterday. Anyone with any imfo on this breed? Thanks

Standard Poodles are awesome. Hunted pheasants over them several years ago in Wisconsin. Before you get one look into Drahthaars. Check out Bob Wests "Treborwolf Drahthaars".......you will not regret

I saw some work at a hunt test a few years ago. This lady breeds them and was trying to get them back in the retriever breeds. I am thinking she was from Canada. We all laughed at the dogs but I have to admit they were impressive in the test. I was shooting flyers one day and we winged one and it walked through some awful briars and stuff and that poodle dove in and got it. Came out cut up and roughed up but with a duck in his mouth. I was totally impressed.

Had a poodle when I was growing up. She was a great rabbit dog. Never trained her, she was just a natural at it.

Make sure you give it one of those classic topiary (poofy ball) haircuts before you put it on a blood trail. That would make an awesome video!

I saw a show on Animal Planet called Dogs 101. They said the Standard Poodle was the smartest dog around, bar none. I've known people that had poodles, friends ,grandparents and etc. But none had the standard size. Good luck.

Just giving you another option for a dog to look at for those with allergy problems. Don't really shed very much at all.
                    Airedale terrier.

Mine is not a hunter but I have no doubt he would lay it on the line if my wife or daughter ever needed him to. Many are great hunting dogs.

I had one and she was the best bird dog I could have even ever thought of having. She did not shed at all, and you don't have to be embarrassed by saying you own a poodle

I had a guy show up on a dove hunt with a standard poodle in the full poof ball cut with purple ribbons tied in her hair. She got a lot of smirks and ribbing from some of the guys but that dog was flawless. She seriously outworked the labs, didn't miss a retrieve all afternoon and was still going like the energizer bunny when it was time to quit.

Y'all laugh at those poof ball haircuts but they serve a very good purpose. They leave the hair long around certain areas to insulate them from cold water and thorns/briars.
