? for the ppl who like to rattle

When you do a rattling sequence what works best for you? I've always watched my dad do it. He will start out with his estrus can a couple of times. Then follow that up with some grunts and maybe a snort weeze. Then he rattles for a few minutes and he uses his grunt call while rattling and racking the grass. I don't know exactly what a deer fight is supposed to sound like. Also where you have the best success rattling, do you have more bucks than does or do you have more does than bucks? I have tried rattling at my family land in Red River County but didn't work too well. I think it was because we have more does than we do bucks.

Also for the public land hunters, is it any different for you? Is rattling worth trying on public land??

    Thanks for the help!

One mistake alot of guys make is not trying to make noise! If you have EVER heard two bucks fighting, it is MAYHEM!!! it sounds like two bulls fighting. Now this is an actual fight.........if they are just sparing, its different. It really depends on the time of the rut period that you are rattling.........The pre rut has always been the best......and the grunting, and raking trees, kicking rocks, all works great. Best thing to do is just experiment. You have to remember that deer have personalities too...........some are passive, and may shy away from aggressive rattling, then some are aggressive as heck and will come charging in to it........
My best results come from starting out with a hard bang of the antlers, and working up from a mild rattling to a hard sequence.........but have had some luck with just the sparring sequence as well..............so give em a try at it all............and im sure you will bring one in.................remember this though, set up where you can see DOWN wind of you, cause the bucks will circle you and come in from down wind MOST of the time, of course theres always that exception so be paying attention to all your surroundings

I always sit near brush so I can thrash the brush and slide my feet around on the ground to make as much noise as possible. I typically use a decoy and put it between myself and where I think the deer will come from facing in the direction that I think the deer will come from. This can be a lifesaver when it comes to trying to get drawn back for a shot.
Pre-rut has always been the best results for me in my area. Once they are hot and heavy on the does it is pretty tough to pull them off.

Typically on my first set I will tinkle the horn tips together lightly for a few seconds and then pause and the slam them together as hard as I possibly can...then I will "grind" them together and make short popping/relocking sounds while still grinding them together...meanwhile I am kicking rocks and brush. You can't make too much noise. After about a minute of this I will twist and pull them apart making a sliding sound as I do it. Then, just sit perfectly still and start glassing the downwind approaches. If nothing shows after 15 minutes I will repeat the procedure. I have had deer come creeping in 45 minutes after I started a set and had them come running right to me with their hair standing up after the first pop of the horns..IMHO it just depends how conditioned they are to rattling. You can overdo it pre-rut and train your younger bucks (that you rattle in but don't shoot) to come to horns cautiously.

Here's a rattling video I made 2 years ago. There are several rattling sequences in the video.
