    Shooting instinct hating

I have been shooting instinct for a little over a year now and I absolutely love it. And i am now just as good as i would have been if i still had sights. But every were i go other bow hunters down me every time for shooting this way telling me its just weird or they will always want to make bets with me on what they can hit and what they know i cant hit. I went to an archery shop here in waco, texas called custom archery works and was looking for a new arrow rest. I was getting great help and then the question popped i bet if i put you in between a 25-30 yard marker that i cant hit the kill zone on the deer pattern i had. AND RIGHT THERE I WONDERED WHY ASK THIS WHY BRING THIS UP AND THE OWNER KEPT MAKING GUESTURES TO HIM SELF LIKE I WAS SOME IDIOT HONESTLY I WANTED TO JUMP OVER THE COUNTER AND GET A HOLT OF THW OWNER. I felt like i was being belittled talked down to the whole time. me and my friend left and i will never go back again. but they just could not get off on talking to me like that. If you shoot with sights thats awesome thats fine with me. heck if you throw rocks whatever lol. to me its bout getting in the woods cherishing the moment and having the challenge if harvesting an animal with my bow not what i use to aim with. I am 25 years old these men were alot older so i was hoping to get great advice and ideas from more wise hunters. I have now realized that walking to that bow shop embarrased me. what do yall think?

I have come across a number of guys who feel like they've come more full circle than me because they've now moved to traditional shooting, and I haven't. I thought about it because the trad bows can really be beautiful works of art. For me, I just don't like shooting a recurve. I grew up shooting stuff like that, and jumped at the first chance to shoot a bow with wheels on them. I still like wheels on my bows, and I don't want to shoot a bow without wheels.

So amigo, if you want to shoot a bow without sights and see how well you can do, more power to you. I bet I can take my sights off my bow and shoot with you inside of 30 yards. I won't outshoot you, but I bet I can hang pretty close. For me that comes from having to shoot a bow without sights for quite a while as a youngster. You ain't huring a thing. Go have fun and tell that dude to get stuffed.

I shot compound unaided for several years. I could shoot that bow really well and took many animals with it. I went back to traditional because I shoot a lot of tournaments and there just is not hardly anyone shooting compounds with no sights. Most shoots I would be the only one in my class and that was no fun. I am a trad guy at heart and love hunting with my sticks. That being said I do think I was better at longer ranges with that compound. But I do not hunt at long ranges so it does not matter. Anyway, don't worry about what those guys or any others think. Shoot what you enjoy and are proficient at and HAVE FUN!!!!!

If you can shoot it and know where your arrows are hitting, then more power to ya. For the last 2 weeks, I have been trying to get used to instinct shooting with an old Browning Wasp. I've missed twice on a javilina, both times right over its back. That javi would be dead with my bowtech. Definatley brings alot more challenge to the hunt.

I got those same vibrations from the people in a bow shop in Amarillo a few years ago. I walked in with money in my pocket to buy and set up a bow. I left with the same money in my pocket and went to another shop. I've since then bought two other bows from that shop and brought my son in law who also bought two, as well as all attachments. I've had a lot of fun bowhunting and spent more than I could afford; but none of it with the "know it alls" at that first shop. I'm not upset with them...it's just their loss, not mine.

Some folks will always down someone or something that is not the same as they do, for instance, just put Mathews on a thread and you'll get hammered. Never really understood that, but I just ignore folks like that, or at least ty to, and go on doing/shooting what I like. If it were me I would try to explain to them why I liked it and if they were still disrespectfull, just blow them off.

What is interesting, is that if you were to throw rocks you would be using the same methods as instinctive shooting. Football quarterbacks do not have sight pins, they throw instinctively, same as baseball pitchers. Your mind instinctively remembers what the result was when you held your bow just so and you can duplicate the same shot each time. I have shot instintively for many years.

I've never shot my hunting bow without sights, but I always shoot instinct while bowfishing and love it. I realize it's just bowfishing, but I also challenge myself and my buddies on longer shots and hitting floating objects (such as cans, floating leaves, etc.) at longer distances. It's definitely more of a challenge not using sights. I think it's a lot more fun. I feel more accomplished after hitting something without sights vs. shooting something with sights.

I feel your pain. Try showing up at a 3-D shoot with a longbow and woods arrows. There is a bunch of trash talking. Then it quiets down when my score is pretty close to theirs even from there stake. Then I sit down and shoot, or cant the bow around a tree. Try doing that with sights.

Simple enough....that bowshop lost a customer. They keep at it and they will be out of business. How cool is that? Free market tends to solve a lot of problems.

I admire you shooting without sights.

Only shoot compound for three years. 1985-1988. Two of those without sights, easier to focus on the target instead of pins in front of my face.
