    Arrow Whistle???

Quick ? for you experienced bowhunters out there. My son and I where practicing shooting our buck target out of our ladderstand for the first time today and noticed that our arrows whistled thru the air. I have not noticed this when shooting field tips at my archery shop, indoors.

Can I assume that broadheads just make more noise when they fly? I was using Beman ICS Hunter 500 arrows and BloodRunner mechanical broadheads, shooting from 20 feet above my target, which is 22 yards away.

Is this normal? Will it scare the deer or is the arrow traveling to fast for them to get out of the way?

    Thoughts?

Where were you standing, if it was to the side and you are shooting feathers some of those will whistle in flight. Most of the time you will not here them from the back. Your BH shouldn't be making noise, if they are change brands.

I've heard a few broadheads whistle that had a hole in the blades. Since switching to Shuttle T's, I haven't heard a sound while in flight. Something to be said about the solid blades.

Check your fletching also. I have had times when fletching would make a sound as you are describing. Check both the head and fletching. It has to be one or the other.

Thanks all. I'll check the fletching and shoot a Rage as well to see if it changes the noise level.

I have stood down range and had arrows shot past me.... You can't hear the "whistle" until the arrow passes you.

Think of a jet. When you see it coming you very seldom hear it u til it passes by. Same thing with your arrow........ IF it is the broadhead makeing the noise.

I think I am going to change arrows. I was 20 feet in the air, shooting down a hill and I coud hear the arrows before they hit my target. I bet it is the fletching. Thanks for your replies.

Like DrenalinJunkie said if it is the broadheads you only hear the noise once it is past you. The game you are hunting should not hear the noise.

If you have a loose vane or a cut in one of them they will buzz going down field.

Not to be argumentative, but that would only be true if the arrow was traveling fater than the speed of sound, 768 mph (1,125 fps), right?
