    Planting Question

We are planting oats tomorrow a.m.

After plowing and putting the oats down with the spreader, would it be best to:

    1. run over the oats with the tractor and spreader tires (easier option)

    or

    2. reattach the plow and plow in the oats.

    Thanks in advance.

I would disc them in at 1" to 1-1/2" and pray for a heavy rain.

      Lightly cover them.....!!!

Drag something like the following behind the tractor.

      Old bed springs.....
      Old logging chain.....
      A 4x4 post....

Anything to drag a thin layer of dirt over the seeds.

Check out my Post on the Army worms !-- They are on the move across South Texas.
They will strip a field within a 48 period.

Set the disc about 1 into soil and tie a drag like chain link fence to the back of the disc. Works good!

Loight discing would be best but if you get a good rain on the slung oats, they will probably come up and do well because most of us have good soil moisture already. The worm deal should be over by the time your oats get big enough for the worms. Cold wet weather will slow them down big time and a frost will kill them.

Drag them with tires. If you don't know what your doing you run the risk of getting them too deep by redisking.

This is why I bought a grain drill.

We planted about 300 acres of wheat with an air truck last year. About half of it we redisked and the other half we pulled a harrow over it. Couldn't tell the difference between the two.
