Can someone explain to me why.......

Texas has it's doe and spike week at the end of the season and not at the beginning of the season? I would think that we are allowing spikes the time to breed, then taking does after that may have been breed by some of your larger deer......Confused, ......I would think that you would want to take the spikes early in the season to prevent them from breeding and the does early in the season to ensure that any that were breed by larger deer would make it to the birthing time of year.

I agree 100% and have wondered the same thing myself.

The theory is likely that a lot of hunters won't burn a buck tag on a spike. However if they one left over they will shoot the spike for meat. JMO.

Then have one week b4 season for does only. set aside a week after season for spikes only.

Some hunters don't want the shots scaring off the big deer for the sake of a spike???

Agreed. Plus reducing the the number of mouths earlier in the season would improve the overall condition of your remaining herd, especially of importance during a harsh winter.

You can kill does and spikes all archery and general season in my county. There is also a special season at the end. It's the hunter's choices as to when they are killed.

I would expect after the Fab 5s debate here on spikes that TP&W will remove spike season and just call it doe season..;0

All year? What county do you live in?

There are several issues I brought to the attention of TPWD a few years ago in the form of a letter and this was one of them.

I never got a response back.

Doe and spike season before and after the general gun season
An extra youth weekend in Oct. (we have been down that road before)
Why S. Texas gets an extra week of general season
Why S. Texas gets 3 bucks (the hill country area Llano, Mason, Gillespie County area, should get more than 5 deer limit)
Blackpowder for the doe and spike season in Jan. This has since changed
Move the Opening weekend for archery to the Saturday closest to Oct 1st
Move opening weekend of general season to the Sat. closest to Nov 1st
Closing weekend of general season to the second Sat. in Jan.

Of course I figured that the majority of the Committee members that make rule changes owned high-fenced ranches in S. Texas so getting anything changed that would hurt S. Tx was probably not going to happen.

I agree with Smart. In my county you can shoot them all season long. It's your own fault if you wait 'till the last minute.
