Stupid question about TX Hunting License Tag

I’m in Brown County. Which buck tag are you supposed to use first? Doesn’t it matter if you shoot a >13” buck or a spike?

Tagging Options: There are tag numbers printed on each tag.

IMPORTANT: TAGS #7, #8 and #9 ARE FOR WHITE-TAILED BUCK OR ANTLERLESS DEER. TAGS #5 and #6 ARE FOR WHITE-TAILED ANTLERLESS DEER ONLY. BUCK TAGS MAY BE USED IN ANY COUNTY; HOWEVER, LACK OF CAREFUL PLANNING WITH TAGS #7, #8, and #9 MAY REDUCE THE NUMBER OF WHITE-TAILED BUCK DEER YOU MAY LAWFULLY TAKE.

NOTICE: READ THE TAG USE DESCRIPTION ON YOUR LICENSE CAREFULLY BEFORE ATTACHING TO HARVESTED DEER.

    USE ON WHITE-TAILED DEER ONLY:
    Tag Number 5 - White-tailed Deer - Antlerless ONLY
    Tag Number 6 - White-tailed Deer - Antlerless ONLY
Tag Number 7 - White-tailed Deer - Buck or Antlerless Deer
Tag Number 8 - White-tailed Deer - Buck or Antlerless Deer
Tag Number 9 - White-tailed Deer - Buck or Antlerless Deer

NOTE: The white-tailed deer tags on the license may be used in any county during an open season for white-tailed deer.

HUNTING LICENSE HARVEST LOG FOR WHITE-TAILED DEER (ON BACK OF LICENSE)

Click HERE to view copy of Harvest Log.

Immediately upon kill of a white-tailed deer the hunter must complete the log, in ink, on the back of the hunting license. Failture to complete the log as required may result in a fine not to exceed $500 for each deer improperly logged. Asterisks indicate bucks of a least 13 inches.

Completion of the log is not required for mule deer, or for white-tailed deer lawfully taken under a MLD permit, LAMPS permit, TPWD Special Drawn Public Hunt permit, U.S. Forest Service antlerless permit, or on a Big Time Texas Hunt.

        Good explination Dena,

Use any of the buck tags you want in any county, just make sure you log it.
Had a processor a couple years ago when this new tag format come on line tell me I used the wrong tag for my county. He made me put on another tag he thought was right. I call the GM a couple days later and he told me the processor told me wrong and screwed me out of a buck tag. He(GM) told me that the state came up with the new format to make it easier. Tags used to say Buck in 1or2 buck county
        or 1 buck county tag.

You are pretty brave to admit that....some might say you don't deserve to hunt till you can recite all the regs.

Good luck with your season amigo!!

Use the first buck tag, which is #7! You can get into some trouble if you don't use the first buck tag on your first buck kill of the season! Got this information from a GW a few years ago!

Don't forget to fill out the log on back. I know people that got checked fishing and got a ticket for not filling the log on combo license.
