    Pipeline hunting

Not to sound dumb, but is it legal to hunt over a feeder on a pipline clearing on private land. And if so how do ya'll rate the hunting. The area I speak of is pretty thick with the clearing running thru and across two small creeks (thats where I want a feeder). I want to hunt hogs there over a feeder but would like to know what ya'll think and if its legal to do so. Thanks guys

A pipeline crosses the ranch that we hunt and it gets hunted all the time. The landowner cautioned us about putting anything "permanent" on the ROW because the company who maintains it come in at any time to clear new growth or whatever. However, we've been there ten years and there has not been any work on the ROW during that time. I believe that, as long as you have permission to hunt from the landowner, you're good to go.

We have a feeder on a pipeline where we hunt, it is great hunting on it. we also have a creek that runs about 50 yards from the feeder. pigs love it.

Thanks guys, thats what I needed to know. Maybe just to be safe I will put my feeder just on the outside of the clearing so if they do come thru all will be out of their way. I hope to get some pig meat and if lucky maybe a deer soon.

Typically, the landowner retains the surface rights of the pipeline right of way. He can do with it what he wishes as long as he doesn't interfere with the operation of the pipeline (i.e. Build a permanent structure, etc.). Most pipeline guys I deal with realize that there are hunters out there and will try not to do anything major during the season.

Thanks for all the info guys. How do ya'll think the hunting will be on that clearing? Like I said there are two small creeks 20 and 40 yards away crossing the clearing and heavy timber on both sides of the clearing. There are lots of hogs and some deer in the area so I think they will come thru justgoing to have to time it right. And last if hogs travel the creek which they do, how long do you think it will take for them to find the feeder and learn the feeder patterns?

I had a stand on a pipeline a few years back in Houston county with a feeder and food plot. We usually did our setups after they mowed the ROW. Beside a ladder stand for bowhunting I sat a box blind up for gun hunting with my daughter. It was one of the best stands I had as the deer came from everywhere to eat the food provided. My favorite day was with my daughter in the pouring down rain and we had 28 deer in the pipeilne. Most deer I had ever seen at one time in East Texas.
