the TX game and fish site shows the 21st as peak of rut for this area. I guess its close to being right. It shows activity way down by the third but I'll be in the stand to find out if its right.

I'm seeing lots of deer by one of my feeders on a lease near Lake Jackson. Its right on the outside edge of some woods on a field border. My north feeder about 1/2 mile away is in an open area just inside the tree line. There hasn't been much activity there yet on the camera as of last Friday.

I'm getting lots of photos of coons, one doe and a spotted fawn. I've seen some small bucks in the field next to it but not on the feeder camera. The misquitoes are terrible near that feeder and I'm wondering if that's related. I've decided to take my fogger and if I'm still not seeing deer on the camera I'm going to fog for the bugs.

I know it can't help the deer but at least I should be able to get into the stand with some blood left. I've got a thermacell for once I'm in the stand but it doesn't help much walking in. I've got the stand on the south side of the north feeder so I can hunt it when the winds are out of the north. I've got the stand on the north side of the south feeder so I can hunt when winds are out of the south.

Its going to be really tough not to hunt the south stand regardless of the wind direction on opening day if I don't start seeing more activity at the north stand and there is no way I'll be able to stay in that tree with the number of bugs around it right now.

I saw two different bucks bird-dogging does this morning about 10:00. I drove 15 yards past one and he never left the doe. This is in Ft. Bend county. I've been seeing this for about 10 days now. Come on October 3rd!

I went to the lease by Lake Jackson around 1 today. I saw 15 deer near my south feeder and between 20 and 30 by the north one. All the deer were in fields near the woods. The woods are swarming with mosquito's so I don't know if they didn't like the bugs or if they just were easy to see because they were in the open. A lot of the deer were bedded down but the bugs were definitely chasing. Should be a fun opener.

I grew up on the Ft. Bend, Brazoria Co. line in Rosharon and the rut was always this time of year. Most years the rut was over before hunting season started. The biggest deer I have have ever shot with a bow, 158 and change, was shot 100 yds off of Miller Rd. right on the river in 1987. The deer hunting was great back then before the hogs and housing developments took over. Very underrated hunting down there.
