    Measuring rainfall amount

Does it matter the size of the container when measuring rainfall amount? Our rainguage only holds 6" .It ran over today so I am trying to figure out exactlly how much we had. A tub we feed cows out of had 10.5" of water in it from just the rain today.I don't know exactlly how much we have had but it is over 12" for the week I am sure of that. Our place is flooded out! Lakes should be filling up nicely around here now. I took some pics this evening after it was safe to get out and around.

.I had the same problem. I put another gauge beside the first one and solved the problem. We sure get a lot of 10" rains now though.

If anyone comes with a good answer to those rain gauges, I sure want to know. Everyone around me is saying they get 5" I get 3" they get 3" I get 1". I don't know if the gauge is wrong or if we just don't get as much rain in this area. JasPro..where is Rising Star? You looked as flooded in (or out) as I am.

It doesn't matter what size the rain guage is. It could be as big around as a wash tub if you want. An inch is an inch and it's going to measure the same whether it falls in something as big around as a nickel, a baseball, a basketball, or a beach ball. As long as the container is the same circumference top to bottom, then you can put inch marks on it and use it.
If I didn't think my opinion was right, then it wouldn't be my opinion. So, any other opinion must be wrong, therefore stupid.

Jason, glad you made it through the storms. Looked like some bad headed stuff out that way. I have no idea about the rain gauge question, but it looks like it might be a few days before you get into the pastures!!

Rudey that is exactlly what I thought too. All the rainfall amounts called into the tv station around us were 5.5" to 6". Which I guess with as much rain as we have had the last week that was entirely possible that is all we got but the tub having that much in it sure makes me wonder.

Rising Star is 30 miles north or Brownwood and 50 miles east of Abilene in Eastland county. I spent the day in Goldthwaite at a goat sale. It didn't rain much down there but about 11:30 everyone there's phone started ringing as the nasty weather was blowing up. Supposedly there was a tornado touch down about halfway between us and Ben. Also when I was coming back and was passing the Brownwood airport I got into a pretty good hail storm. Radio was flashing weather bulletins about a tornado headed that direction. I didn't hang around to see either. LOL

                    Andy,
We were already seeing mosquitos from the 2.7" we got at the first of last week.

Rudey is right . It doesn't matter the size. I have gotten over 12" here in italy in the last three days.

I only show about 4 inches total for the week here in Belton and I only got 1 inch yesterday. We headed west to London yesterday evening and Hwy 190 was closed at Kempner due to water over the road. I think they had it shut down for about 3 hours total. It receded and we finally got on our way and then my buddy got sick and I had to turn around and come back home. Missed the turkey opener dang it!

Judy, I know what you mean about the difference in gauges. I don't have an answer for you.

Double L sorry to hear your buddy got sick. I ran down to temple today to meet True Aim and when I crossed the Leon before going into Temple it was sure nuff muddy. There were full blown trees floating in the river as well. Around Flat the trees looked like there had been a twister. They weren't just snapped they were twisted and laid over. I didn't see any damaged homes just barns.

Rain gauges can be any shape or size. The ranch got six inches of rainfall Friday night. Now, that's a LOT of water runoff!

Should have hollered Jason. Wouldn't have got me though...was out all afternoon cutting trees and burning brush. You didn't stop by and see Mack while you were here?
