    Sharpening broadheads.......

I was wanting to sharpen the blades on my used slick tricks. Anyone have some ways to do this? I found a guy on you tube who does it with a big piece of leather a tool to hold your blade and some kinda powder called yellowstone. Looks to work well. I have a sharpener that you hold but it seems to damage the blade more than anything! What should i use?

I do it but don't use the stropping sp? compound. I can get them very sharp. I do it the same way the guy on youtube does it.

I use a Lansky with fine diamond stone on my Spitfire blades.

I use a whetstone and some honing oil. I hold the little buggers with a pair of needle nose pliers and take 'em 5 passes on each side at 25 degrees. Then I whip out the little stone and take the blades 10 passes at 17 degrees. That puts a nice razor edge on 'em and you're good to go! I've put the same slick trick through about 4 animals doing it this way.

Same with me, just hold them with pliers and hit them with a regular sharpener.

              Stunt -
Here's a LINK to the site where I get my whetstones. I use a medium course and a fine. You can easily use the directions that come with the stones, it's really easy.

I use the clamp from the GATCO system. I put the blade in and lay the clamp/blade flat on the leather and pull away from the edge. I do about 15 strokes per side and it will be real sharp. I do the same with my knife but no clamp. Have you ever seen anyone strop a straight razor? Do it the same way.

Yep. It works great. You can get your strop and Yellowstone stropping compound here.

I use a little clamp from Home Depot to hold the blade.

I use a cheap little carbide type sharpener to take the dings out and to prep the blade for the strop.

This is the method that Gary Cooper (the owner of Slick Trick) recommends.

I will post some pictures later.

                      I have the same question.

Will these work? Any input on which is better? I got these off of Cabela's website.

The blades must have a decent edge on them to start with. I don't use the compound and mine get real sharp.

I use thunderhead 125 gr. Those have replaceable blades but i have shot hogs and deer with them and then just tune them up with a broadhead sharpener. I have had good results doing it this way. If a blade gets any hard nicks in it then I just replace them with new ones ( you can buy just the replacement blades )and then keep the old ones for a pratice head and use those for getting ready for hunting season.

I have used the second and the third one.The third I don't like at all the second will do the job but you need to take it slow and don't put much pressure on the blades when sharpening them.
