    hunting journals

    who keeps hunting journals.

example: weather, what you saw , times and so on.

if you keep one what is some of the other info you keep?

for the people who have kept journals have you ever plugged the info into a charting program?

I did a little bit last season. I really did it cause some of the guys would show up late and walk up on you after you had been sitting there for a while. But I put my location, time out, what I saw, temp and wind direction, and what time I saw the critters. I have never entered it in a charting program but I might after this season. Depends on how much I hunt at the grandparents.

I've been keeping one for 30 + years. In addition to the other things you mentioned I write where the animal was hit, what it was hit with and how far it traveled. I have one for my kids and my wife as well. These are very fun to go back and read!

I've kept one for fishing but not for hunting. In regards to fishing, you could look back after a few years and start to identify some patterns that were key. Probably could do the same in regards to hunting. I'd keep any information that I felt was pertinent to the hunt. example: moon phase, temp, cloud cover, barometric pressure, etc....................

My journal is in the form of video`s. Been doing this for over 40 years. Started when my boys were young and now their getting in that old fart range. Ok, close.
Every now and again we get together and enjoy a "look back." Talk about laughing. Nice thing about it is when I`m gone the boys will have all those memories and good times on tape. Gone but not forgotten.

I do this as well. What I do is get each year's TP&W Book and put it away... I keep a log of my hunting, fishing, and even horseback rides.. oh and most of all my ladies doe hunts. end of each year, i fold and place in the TPW book along with my old license. Each one fits snuggly and nice in a ziploc baggie and then i file away. i have only been hunting, etc. for fourteen years and wish i had more..

I started keeping a journal last season. I enjoy looking back at memories, and this is a great way to do it. What sparked this, is that I wish I could know of all the hunting stories that my dad and grandfather had from many years ago. So I figured I would be proactive and start journaling so that one day I can pass it down to my kids and grandkids.

I have a journal for every year since 2002. With pictures included, they end up being 50-75 typed pages long/year. Along with a detailed recap of what I see from the blind, I also inclue thoughts running through my head at the time. Each year I also include prices for various items (what I pay to lease, bag or corn, gallon of milk, gallon of gas, etc.)

They are a real hoot to go back and read. I know for example that as excited as I am for this weekend to get here, the acorns are going to screw me and I will likely have no good deer come to my feeder. Likewise, I will write for the 7th year in a row that I will never EVER again hunt the afternoons when the temp is over 90. And like every other year, I find my self on stand, sweating like a _______ and promising myself I won't do it again.
