    Input on video camera

I'm ready to buy a camera and try my hand at the video thing. I used to video all of the time when I strictly gun hunted, but it's a little more challenging up close. So what says the braintrust on an affordable video camera? Do you use a tape, hard drive or memory card type and why? My old Sony Hi8 bit the dust about the time I started bow hunting, so I need some quick educating before Oct. 3rd!

ive decided that my next hunting camera will be remote controlled so that i can start and stop recording without removing my hand from the riser and make a bunch of extra movements. that said, most of waht i an seeing is no longer tape based, and lots of dvd/hdd models.

I will be buying the Canon HV40 (i think)..It is HDV and pretty good pricing. For a tape camera it has the guts of some of the bigger cameras.

If you are wanting tape format but a different brand..look at the Sony HC9. I believe it has a LANC input for a remote and other stuff

Remote is a plus, my old camera had that feature.

Focus on getting the best "Optical Zoom", and NOT the best "Digital Zoom". Optical zoom uses the lens to zoom in/out, and produces best results for videotaping in the field.

I'm not up on latest and greatest and therefore cannot make a recommendation for models. I still use a Sony Handycam running 8mm tape and it's been great for many years now.

I just bought myself the Sony HandyCam HD model, which uses a card. I played around with it yesterday and the clarity and functionality of it was very impressive. Very simple to use. I will be hunting from the ground mostly, so it should be pretty simple. Now I just need to learn how to edit videos, to show the Slow Motion version.

Any advice on the Slow Motion and how to do it? Free software?

I am very happy so far with my Canon ZR950.....went the Sony route two years ago and it died on me after the one year warranty was out. It was as expensive to fix it as it was to buy a new one. Heard good things about the Canons from my electronics guy and found the Canon ZR950 had a remote and 48X optical zoom. I then found it refurbished for $150. For that price I couldn't pass it up...it came to me and I couldn't tell it was refurbished versus new. So far so good. I am lovin' the remote in the blind while I scout. Can't wait to use it when its game time.

Here's another one I found refurbished on Ebay....

Thanks Smart, you're pushing me towards a Canon. My Sony had to go in for repair too, just after the warranty was out. I probably could have bought a better camera with what I spent on repairs. Now it's busted again with the same basic issue. Thanks for the link too!

I HAVEN'T YET BOUGHT A CAMERA, BUT THE ONE I AM LOOKING AT IS JUST LIKE THE ZR950 BUT INSTEAD OF THE MINI DV IT IS HDD. IT IS THE CANON MODEL FS21 WITH 16 GB INTERNAL MEMORY AND ALSO EXCEPTS SD CARDS. THE MODEL 20 IS 8 GB INTERNAL AND MODEL 22 IS 32 GB INTERNAL. I HAVE ACTUALLY HELD AND LOOKED AT/THROUGH THE MODEL 20 AND IT SEEMS PRETTY CLEAR, HOPEFULLY THE PLAYBACK WILL BE HE SAME. BEING THAT IT'S A CANON, I'M SURE IT WILL BE.

I HAVE FOUND THE MODEL 21 WITH EVERYTHING YOU NEED FOR AROUND $540 BRAND NEW, HERE'S THE LINK-

I believe the Canon remotes will only work in front of the camera

not sure if you have run across this yet or not, but some of the reviews i have read on this point out it plays choppy video when playing it back on a pc. have you seen this?
