Who all hunts in Runnels County?

    ME.

    #2
We hunt a place near Hatchel. We have had a lot of rain this summer in comparison to other areas in Texas. Seen plenty of deer and hogs on the TC just no bruisers yet. I think that may have do with all the greenage down there. Looking forward to archery opener only 1 other guy on the lease bow hunts with me so we have the place to our selves before the barrage of gunfire.

I do--on the one of the smaller hills in the northeast corner of the county. We saw next to nothing last year; only two deer taken on 260 acres. We have already beed seeing more, and that in spite of the hogs everywhere, so i am very hopeful.

The quality is fair antler wise, body wise is better. Every once in a 3-5yrs we see a 140"+ animal. We have good numbers on our place. Hopefully we have a great year.

For those that do hunt runnels or for those that have large wheat fields, what is the best way to hunt the mesquite flats bordered by wheat? We have put stands in the flats near water and in the funnels to the fields. The landowner says that he sees anywhere from 50-100 deer in the fields at one time. I have seen 40 at one time and the wheat wasn't growing at the time. wheat fields are new to me but I assume they hit these mostly late eve and at night.

Though I don't hunt in Runnels County, I'm only 2 miles from there in Taylor Co. I live right off 83 and hunt by Graham Lake. I can fill my tag when I want. Best I've gotten in 20 years was a 120. Best I've seen....150. Plenty of pigs though!

I do not hunt in Runnels County but I do hunt just across the county line in Taylor County. We also have tons of hogs and some average deer. On our wheat fields, the deer tend to leave quickly after first light and do not return until late dusk. Based on my experience, the best hunting (in regards to the wheat fields) is in the morning. The deer tend to stay on the field just a little longer after first light, than they arrive before last light. A good stand in a location that is an active deer trail onto the field has worked well for me and my friends.

As far as the quality is concerned, a few 10 points have come off of our lease over the last several years, but primarily 8 points. I have no complaints, because the quantity of deer is sufficient to always put meat in my freezer and I have a great group of friends to hunt with. I hope this thread helps you out. Best of luck hunting in Taylor County this year.

Im there in Runnels Co just NW of Ballinger off 158. My dad's been leasing there for 6 or so years and this is my 3rd. From what I can tell pretty even ratio buck/doe in that part of the county. Have had a bobcat problem last few years, but in my book, thats not a problem at all... just something else to hunt. Somehow I think our property must be the only place in TX without any hog sign whatsoever, But I hear places around there have lots.

We really dont have hogs either. A few were spotted last year, but none this year. Guess we're lucky.

I hunt with Crookhunter and all we have seen on trailcams is doe and a couple of spike bucks. Like he said, this is our first year hunting in this area and were told by the owner that the doe to buck ratio was really off due to the place not being hunted (that could have been a sales pitch), but he thought it was about 20 to 1. I have seen a group of 80 deer before so I know there is deer out there. We have seen a group of batchelor bucks in the fields but none on camera and the cameras has been up for 30 days plus. Any advised on buck movements or how to hunt them out here? Is the rut our best bet and when does the rut take place in this area. Thx
