Drawn Hunt and Compartments

if you are drawn for a hunt, and it is by compartment, when is the compartment assigned? And is it random or do you get input on which compartment you will be hunting?

They will have a meeting the first morning to go over all the safety and rules/regs and then assign a compartment. Some will let you request an area others are random.

I'm not sure about those but you can get the number from the booklet and call and talk to the biologist directly to get the scoop and any tips they may be willing to give.

Mason Mtn draws a pasture out of the hat for each group assigned on the first day of hunting. It is a great place to hunt and enjoy the outdoors.

Which hunt at Texana? The hubby and I got drawn for the Nov hunt. I hear it's gonna be a slaughter!

as stated above, they will usually assign each pasture a number and have each hunter draw a number. Whatever number you draw, is the pasture you will hunt. At least that is how they did it at the Matador Wildlife Management Area

On the ones I've been on, compartment and assigned blind, if you know which one you want to hunt, you can request it at the same time they ask you for your permit. 90% of the time, I get the compartment or stand I request.

What I've noticed on comp hunts is that they either draw out of a hat or go in the order you were drawn from the computer. Also, some of them like to match a comp size to the size of the hunting group. A one person group usually won't be able to pick the biggest comp.

At the Chap a few years ago, we were drawn and they let a group pick their spot before us because they had been there before and requested it......Only problem, they hunted as standby. That kinda ticked me off.

The info sheet they sent me with my permits for Matador this time says

"Hunters will be allowed to select hunting compartments, from those which are available based on hunt party size, in the order they were selected by the computer drawing;"

At Matador they will let you choose your compartment based upon your drawing order. On your permit that you get in the mail, the last couple of digits indicate the order that you were drawn in.

Most of the time they assign a compartment but sometimes if everyone hasn't shown up you may be able to switch if you look at your assignment and don't like it. I was able to do that last year down at Devil's Sinkhole. At Kerr Exotic Archery three years ago I was able to chose between a couple of adjacent compartments. Depends on who is running it the hunt, I think.

I hear they are covered up with deer and the deer are pretty tame due to all the campers feeding them.
