Do you carry your 1911 locked, cocked and ready to rock or do you carry with the hammer down. I just got a kimber and I'm not that familiar with it yet, I'm used to carrying a Glock so this a whole new world.

I carry Glocks and don't own a 1911, but I was under the impression if you had a round chambered and the hammer down, the firing pin could contact the primer, and thus they are intended to be carried cocked and locked, so if you wanted the hammer down, you should have the chamber empty,
Is this correct?

I carry with one in the chamber, hammer half cocked, safety on.
Ready to fire is so smooth, it's almost like it happens in one action.
Just took my renewal Monday night and the ten ring got erased entirely from the target.
Wish I could say the same for the other seven yahoos in the class. Looked like shotgun patterning on that end of the range.

I was in a donut store a couple of weeks ago and right next door to it is a gun store. There was a man standing in line in front of me that I believe is the owner of the gun store and the first thing I noticed about him was that he had a pistol, looked like a 45 but I'm no expert, stuck in the back of his pants with the hammer back. My first thought was that one day he will mess up and shoot hisself in the behind. Then after a few more seconds standing there I realized that he also had a pistol under each arm that also had the hammers back and the holster they were in was angled up in such a way that they were both pointed at my head. When I realized this I stepped to his side so as not to be in the line of fire.
In my mind there were so many things wrong here that I was dumbfounded. First of all I was under the impression that only a licensed peace officer could carry a pistol openly in public. If this isn't correct then please correct me. His were completely out in the open and not concealed in any way.
Now I know that these guns have safeties and I'm sure they were on but my daddy taught me better than to point a gun, any gun, at anyone unless you intend to do them harm. To me there wouldn't be any difference in having a loaded shotgun on safety of course and waving it around in a crowded room. In my opinion this guy is a tragedy waiting to happen.
All that to say please carry your pistol with the hammer down. It's just one less thing to go wrong and it's easy enough to pull the hammer back if you need to. I've been considering getting my CHL just haven't gotten around to making the time to do it.

So I guess if you carry anything other than a 1911 style pistol you should not have a round chambered and rack the slide when you draw the weapon.
The only way my 1911 can fire when it is "cocked and locked" is if I draw it from the holster, move the slide safety off and pull the trigger.
