Just bought a remington feeder at academy, its the metal barrel 55 gallon type. It came with a small drop funnel, do I need a different one or will this work fine?
IMO, a funnel should always be used inside the drum to insure all the feed is dispensed. There is more of a possibility for problems with moisture without the funnel. I also think a metal spout should be used between the drum bottom and the spinner plate.
I've always used a funnel, but I used to put my electronics unde the funnel inside the barrel. I've known lots of people wo do not use a funnel though and they have never had much of a problem.
With a funnel all of your corn will be gone when it goes empty-
Pro- no food for the weevils to live in when the drum goes empty between seasons (I just cleaned 2 of these infestations out)
Con- no extra corn to go shake out when a drum goes empty during season.
W/out a funnel-
Pro- if it goes empty during a season you can walk over and give it a shove or two and the natural corn funnel built up inside will fall down and throw for a few more feedings- giving you enough time to hunt it a few times before refilling.
Con- there will be corn left over & this will become a caked up mess if it ever gets wet & will have weevils living in it if it left in the bottom of the drum between seasons.
I'll be building a new 55g feeder this week & haven't made my mind up yet on installing one or not.
