    No fawns

Our place is south of Abilene about 30 miles. Last year, we saw a number of pictures on the game cams of fawns. This year, not one. We also are not seeing any little piglets either. Adults, yes. Young? No. Could be that the range had lots of food and they just aren't visiting the feeders.

    Thoughts?

This same thing was talked about 2 weeks ago. I'm not too far from you in Cisco. I've seen less fawns this year than in the last 4 years. On my game cames I've seen one single fawn and 1 set of twins all season. Normally, I'll see 2-3 sets of twins and several singles. Don't have a clue as to whats up. My neighbor did find a fawn that was covered in fire ants and was still alive. He tried to take care of it but it still died.

Could be the drought has caused a high mortality rate this year...

Record drought may have something to do with it. There not alot of nutrition for the does right now. Lack of vegetation equals less cover. Without the cover , the predators are cleaning house.

Just had this discussion with our WMA biologist. We had a bumper crop of fawns early on but in the past two weeks I've seen only 2. He confirmed that the drought conditions have been especially hard on the fawn crop.

For us, it's one generation of deer removed from the herd.

Drought isn't too bad near Abilene. Last year was pretty bad but they've made up for it.

Ours is drought, and we are looking at about an 5% to 8% fawn crop. This is in the Pearsall area. So now we will have a gap in both this years fawns and 3 1/2 yr old deer (last poor fawn crop).

Probably coyotes as much/more than drought.

I kinda thought we were having a similar problem, until I pulled my camera card on Saturday...
