Although aging a deer on the hoof is not 100% foolproof, I am pretty confident in my ability to age a deer, especially when I am able to look at multiple pictures and compare them to the other multiple pictures of the rest of the bucks in the deer herd. Thanks for the input. NOW, back to the original ? will he make 13" minimum or not?[/QUOTE]

With the last pic I'd say no.

The last pic in post #1 OR the pic I posted in post #30?

Pic in post #30 is a completeley different deer that is not as wide as the 4 point.

Too young, not 13". I'd let him walk....he's just a baby.

Looks like 2.5 year old and too narrow....less than the 13" minimum in the last picture

...so I guess what some of you are saying is that on leases or public land where hunter's kill the 2 yo that hits 13" but passes on the 5 YO basket buck that is under 13" that in the long run that is going to be good for the herd genetics?? On managed properties, we take out any buck at 3-4 that lacks potential simply to put the breeding odds in favor of the good deer....In counties where AR has allowed for wider deer, that simply means to me that sub 13" 2 yo deer are being allowed to mature...I'd like to see the long range results (5-10 years from now) of those same counties. As I said earlier, the SHOOTER could make the age call if he felt confident in aging deer...GW could confirm that if needed at check-out....actually, it makes little difference to me personally as I try for older deer across the board....but I think it is food for thought in long range herd management dynamics....

As I said, that sounds fantastic in theory. I just want to know how age is going to be proved by either the hunter or game warden. Remember, tooth aging is not as accurate as people lead on.

Personally, I feel that a 13 inch wide or 15 inch main beam would be preferable. I'd imagine that something of that nature will be coming soon. This whole program is still relatively new, so we can't expect perfection yet.

You really through a wrench in with that pic of a totally different deer So based on the last pic of a 2 yo 12 in wide 8 point, I would not shoot the 3 yo 4 point You will be able to make the call when he walks under you
