Pigeons ??? (to shoot or not)

Lots of free roaming pigeons where I hunt doves ...
    1. Can you eat em?
    2. should you shoot em?
    3. are they legal game?
    4. is it an ethical kill?
    5. ????

No laws protecting Pigeons that I know of we use for bird dog training. There are nasty birds I would never eat one. Then again in New Mexico you cannot kill them in the city limits but no laws against catching them. Were we train is way beyond the city limits

When we were kids Dad would shoot pigeons and we would eat them if we weren't close to a city. Dad said he didn't like the things the city birds would eat.

We also raised pigeons for eating. Taste just like doves only bigger.

Had some older mexican men dove hunting with us once. They would only shoot the pigeons, said doves were a waste of shells. They cooked a few up later and were same as eating dove. My dog didn't want anything to do with them though.

I've quit shooting them. A friend shot a guys racing pigeon one year. Had jewelry on it and when he called the guy, he was not amused. Turns out they are training their young of the year about the same time as dove season starts. If it were me I'd probably train my new pigeons in June but......

Years ago people ate pigeons all the time, but they would not eat the adults. Farmers would build boxes in their barns for nesting and just before the young were old enough to fly they would take the "squab" out of the nest and eat them. Not many pigeons left where I'm form so we don't shoot them.

We used to eat them when we were kids. They were like a big dove.

Ethically, I say shoot them if you are going to use them. Don't shoot them if you're not!

                        Have a blast!

My dad used to make soup out of them, I thought it was pretty good at the time.

No ethics about this one. Non- native species. Kill em all. If you wanna eat them go ahead, if not leave em lay. No season, no limit.

                              If it flies, it dies!

They are fair game and pretty fair table fare.
