I've got the itch to start a new project of a more traditional kind. I am wanting to build a long range hunting rifle built around the 6.5mm caliber. I had originally looked at building a 6.5-284 Norma, but I want something hotter. I would like a 6.5mm cartridge that will push a 140 grain bullet at around 3200-3300fps. I just don't really know what is out there. Any of you custom builders like Cajun Blake got any ideas? I think this would make a very versatile caliber because of the high BC and SD of the 6.5mm projectile. The 6.5-284 already completes in the 1000 yard F Cass rifle segment and it is a relatively mild cartridge.

got to www.benchrest.com and www.6mmbr.com
act like a sponge and start doing a little research
get a note pad and write stuff down
I only shot short range BR (100, 200, 300 yds) as not sure which cartridge is king right now for the long range guys
my bet would be on the 6.5x284 , 6BR, or the newer 6.5x47L (L for Lapua)
rifles weigh around 15 - 17 lbs , current world record is 10 shots measuring around 4" at 1000 yds
on bencrest.com , you can review match results to see what people are shooting
IMO , you DO NOT need a super large capacity 30 caliber cartridge. I support you 100% with the 6.5mm selection.
if you have the $$$$ , you can get a killer deal right now on a used rifle due to the economy . New LR rifles can cost $3,000 or more with a custom action. You can get a used rifle for $1500.
check out the FS ads on benchrest.com and over at the Shooters Corner - see link .. click on " The List "

Bob White owns the Shooters Corner in N.J. , awesome guy who will treat you right . I've bought several rifles from Bob and thousands of dollars worth of reloading supplies .
email me if you have any more Q's as "accurate rifles" are another of my passions

FYI .... I also "copy/paste" posts that intrigue me , create a "word" document and then right click "paste" info into word. then save and print .Last edited by Cajun Blake; 08-29-2009, 09:02 AM.
